The 200 words were drawn from a number of widely used high frequency word lists, including:
- The Oxford List
- Magic 100 and Magic 200 words (M100 and M200)
- The Dolch list
In addition, some words were included based on clinical experience as well as the need to include homophones of highly frequent words. All but the the most frequent regularly spelled words (words with direct letter pattern / sound relationships) were excluded, since these should be learnt through decoding.
Please note: teaching students sight words before they have learnt basic decoding skills is NOT recommended, and not supported by research! Teaching sight words should be a complementary strategy to assist the development of fluency as part of a systematic, phonics based method of reading instruction.
